Practice Statement:

FROM BRIAN STERN – FOUNDER

It is the intention of the Structural Wellness Center to act with integrity, good-will, and honesty in order to establish a safe, positive, and rewarding world-class environment within which each client can observe, transform, and enrich the entirety of their self.

Combining Physical and Psychological Perspectives into a Single Unified Wellness Strategy

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999, Brian began training at the Institute for Core Energetics – a four year training program that leads to  certification as a body psychotherapist.  The work was created by John Pierrakos and Alexander Lowen,  both students of Wilhelm Reich.  Reich was a visionary that studied connections between physical structure, physiology, personal history, and the shape of our lives.

The main emphasis of the course was in discovering that the body could be an essential component in the therapeutic relationship.  Learning to observe and communicate with clients about their lives through the lens of their structure was a continued focus.  This lens led to the discovery that deep, lasting change is possible and continues to be a valuable lesson.

While in college Brian also began to practice yoga with Joan White – this cultivated a life long passion for self-discovery and service to others.

Guidance, Mastery and the Continuing Journey

As Brian’s yoga practice deepened he began to teach as well.  He also became accustomed to waking up in the middle of the night with intense back-pain. Soon his yoga practice became more and more about pain management. The frustration of his ***** so he decided to learn all he could about the body – and his body in particular: anatomy, physiology, immunology, kinesiology, embryology, histology — all the thrilling stuff. Deep study was followed by practical hands-on work.

Brian completed his training at the Guild for Structural Integration in early 2005 under the guidance and mastery of Rolfer Peter Melchior and Rolfer David Davis. Both graduates of the Rolf Instutute of Structural Integration in Colorado; these two teachers shaped our practice. Continued studies with medical schools in the region, as well as their faculty, consistently informs, contextualizes, and enhances the work.

It is the intention of the Structural Wellness Center to create a safe, positive, and rewarding environment within which each client can observe, transform, and enrich their self.

We continue the practice of ever deepening and exploring this art, and consider it the art of being a human being.
